Get ready to mash your way to Desi flavor town with my delightful Smashed Potato Chaat! This recipe is not just a snack; it's a whole experience that'll have your taste buds dancing. Let's get smashing!
Smashed Potato Chaat is your go-to solution for those pesky Desi chaat cravings! Now, I can already hear the desi aunties and bajis rolling their eyes while looking at my recipe card and saying, "Yeh kaha se quicker way hai chaat banane ki?" But hold up, ladies! While those potatoes are boiling away, you can sneak in some prep time for the other ingredients. When the potatoes are baking, catch up on your favorite drama, or indulge in a cheeky nap on the sofa!
For those who don't own an oven or prefer not to sacrifice the perfect desi crispies, smash the potatoes on Tawa (skillet) with a generous drizzle of oil.
Smashed Potato Chaat Ingredients
- Baby Potatoes: I like using small, tender potatoes that cook quickly and are perfect for smashing. Get them from grocery stores near you, or farmer’s markets. I get mine from Costco. They have a large bag of baby potatoes for below $7.
- Kashmiri Red Chili Powder: Kashmiri chili powder is vibrant and known for its rich color and mild heat. It is perfect for adding flavor without overwhelming spice. I get mine from Indian grocery stores or Amazon. I have linked the brand I like the best for it.
- Turmeric Powder: I mean; it isn't Desi if it does not have the warm, earthy flavor of turmeric powder. It also has health benefits. You can purchase it at any major grocery store.
- Coriander Powder: Ground coriander seeds add a citrusy, slightly sweet flavor to this smashed potato chaat.
Chaat Toppings and Condiments
- Coriander and Mint Chutney: Indian chaat is incomplete without "hari chutney"(coriander mint chutney). I love making a large batch of chutney and storing it in the fridge for any day chaat cravings but honestly, you can be creative and use it with many different dishes.
- Date and Tamarind Chutney: I love making homemade chutney but I also love store-bought. I will mention the brand I love for date and tamarind chutney below. FYI, no, they are not paying me to promote this product, and not every recipe blogger who recommends it is promoting it for marketing purposes only ;).

- Salt to taste
- Cilantro-mint chutney
